Product reviews

Shoppers can rate products from one to five stars and write a review on the product page. You check every review before it appears, and you can reply to it in public. Reviews help other shoppers decide, and Google can show the stars in its search results.

Reviews are on by default. You find the settings in NXCart → Settings → General → Product reviews.

What shoppers see

Under the product description, the Reviews section shows:

  • the average rating and the number of reviews, with a bar for each number of stars;
  • the text How you check reviews (see The disclosure text);
  • the reviews, newest first, ten per page, each with the reviewer's name, the date and your reply;
  • a Verified buyer label on reviews from customers who bought the product from you;
  • the Write a review form: a star rating, an optional title, the review, a name and an email address.

The email address is never shown. It is used to recognise a buyer, and a shopper can review each product once with the same address.

The form works without an account and without JavaScript. After sending, the shopper sees a thank-you note; the review appears once you approve it.

Approving reviews

New reviews wait in NXCart → Reviews, marked Waiting for approval. For each review you can:

  • Approve it, so it appears on the product page;
  • Reject it, so it stays hidden (you can approve it later);
  • Reply: your reply appears under the review as Reply from the store. Leave the reply empty to remove it;
  • Remove it for good.

Tick several reviews to approve, reject or remove them at once. Filter the list by status, or search by product, reviewer or text.

To get an email for each new review, keep New reviews on in Settings → Emails. See Store owner emails.

Verified buyer

A review is marked Verified buyer when the shopper's email address, or their account, has a paid or delivered order with that product. Reviews sent through the link in the review-request email are verified too.

Asking buyers for a review

With Ask buyers for a review by email on, NXCart emails each buyer once per order, a set number of days after delivery (10 by default, set in Days after delivery). The email lists the products of the order with a Write a review button for each; the button opens the product page with the review form already filled in with the buyer's name and email.

  • Orders with something to ship are counted from when you mark them fulfilled. Orders with only digital products are counted from payment.
  • Products the buyer has already reviewed are left out.
  • Every email has an unsubscribe link. A buyer who unsubscribes gets no more review requests.
  • Orders completed more than 30 days before you updated to this version are not emailed.

The emails are sent by a scheduled task. Create it once: go to System → Scheduled Tasks, click New, choose NXCart: Review requests, and run it once a day.

The disclosure text

EU consumer law asks shops that show reviews to say whether and how they check that reviews come from real customers. NXCart shows this text above the reviews:

We check every review before it is published. Reviews marked Verified buyer come from customers who bought the product from us.

It is shown in each shopper's language. To use your own wording, write it in How you check reviews; leave the field empty to go back to the built-in text.

Turning reviews off

Untick Show reviews on product pages. The whole section disappears from every product page, including the stars in search results. Stored reviews are kept, and come back when you turn reviews on again.

Privacy

Reviews are included when you export a customer's data from Customers. When you anonymise a customer, their reviews stay with their rating and text, but the name, email address and IP address are removed, and their unsubscribe record is deleted.
