Catalog filters
Shoppers can narrow a category, the All products page or a brand page with a Filters panel above the products. They can filter by:
- Price: a from and to amount. A product matches when one of its variants costs within the range, sale prices included.
- In stock only: hides products that are sold out. Digital products always count as in stock.
- Brand: pick one or more brands.
- Your product options, such as Colour or Size: pick one or more values.
Brands and option values show as buttons that shoppers tap to pick. The Filters button shows how many filters are in use, and the panel stays open while any are. Picking several values of one filter shows products that match any of them (Red or Blue). Different filters combine (Red or Blue, and size M). Shoppers click Apply filters, and Clear filters removes them all.
Setting up the filters
Go to NXCart → Settings → General → Catalog filters.
- Price range, In stock only and Brand are on by default. Untick one to hide it.
- Filter by product options lists the option names your variants use, such as Colour, Size or Material, with how many different values each has. Tick the ones shoppers should filter by, up to 20. None are ticked at first.
Save, and the panel shows on the storefront.
What the panel offers
The panel lists only what the page holds: the brands and option values of the products in that category (or in the whole shop, on All products). A group with only one choice is left out, because it would filter nothing. Brand pages have no brand group.
An option value spelled the same way on different products is one choice. "Dark Blue" on one product and "Navy" on another are two choices, so keep your option values consistent.
Links and search engines
A filtered page has its own link, such as …/shop/category/hoodies?filter_color=black,blue&in_stock=1, so shoppers can bookmark or share it. Paging, sorting and searching keep the filters.
Search engines are asked not to index filtered pages; they keep indexing the plain category page. This avoids thousands of near-identical pages competing with your categories in search results.
Good to know
- The filters work without JavaScript.
- Option filters read an index that NXCart updates whenever you save or import a product. Updating to this version builds it once for your whole catalog.
- Only active variants count. A colour that only a disabled variant has does not appear.
